BABGOC (Jakarta) – Deputy Director General of BABGOC (Bali Asian Beach Games Organizing Committee), Mr. Djoko Pramono, talks about his preparation as well as his aspiration for Indonesia with the 1st Asian Beach Games.
Q: What is the objective of Asian Beach Games and what could Indonesia gain by having this particular championship?
A: As we all know many Asian Countries can be considered as maritime countries and Indonesia in particular has a vast number of beaches that we can use to our advantage. There was a questing asked by our friends that mainly live in regional areas, ‘why don’t we have a beach sports championship?’ We thought this was a very good idea considering that Indonesia is an archipelago country. So, we are very excited to be able to host this Asian Beach Games.
Q: Do you have any concerns in terms of the number of participating athletes considering the not-so-popular aquatic or beach sports among Indonesians?
A: Well, I do but we are fully aware of the situation. It seems that our people since the colonial era have been told not to go into the sea. As a result there’s a sea-related phobia amongst Indonesians even up until today. I happen to love the sea and enjoy water sports but I have observed that this mentality still prevails.
Q: Can you elaborate more on that?
A: Long ago many ancient kingdoms in Indonesia ruled over the sea, for instance the Singosari, Majapahit and Sriwijaya Kingdom. They practically reigned supreme over our vast ocean. However, after the arrival of the Dutch, the Portuguese, the Spaniards and the British we seem to have been frightened to go into the sea. This is why it is imperative that we socialize this positive view that our nation can be greater and we can leave an indelible mark in the world of water and beach sports if we make the best use of our ocean.
Q: What are some challenges you’ve encountered?
A: One of our main challenges is, as you’ve said, the unpopular aquatic sports among Indonesians, for example the triathlon which doesn’t have an official sport organization to support them. We’re hoping now with the first Asian Beach Games, it can spark the spirit amongst fans of aquatic sports to form an official body.
Q: So how do you approach them if there is no official organization?
A: We go directly to the person or groups that have an interest in those sports. That’s what we did on the triathlon team, as well as the wood ball team for example. We were not aware of this sport but since there is a demand coming from other countries for it to be included, we went to them directly. I mean we cannot be the only country not playing the sport now can we? So, as you can see there are a lot of benefits hosting the Asian Beach Games.
