An Interview with Ramon Suzara, ABG's Director of Operation

BABGOC (Jakarta) - The name Ramon Suzara is not unfamiliar in beach sporting events. His vast experience and knowledge in beach volleyball has brought him to such big events, such as the Asian Games in Doha where he is assigned as the Competition Manager. He is bringing that field expertise to the first ever implementation of the Asian Beach Games in Bali.

Q: Can you tell me what your background is?
A: I’m a volleyball person, that’s how I know Madam Rita Subowo (the President of the Indonesian NOC (National Olympic Committee) as well as the Director General of BABGOC (Bali Asian Beach Games Organizing Committee). For the last 15 years I have been in the International Volleyball Federation where I am one of the technical supervisors. In the Philippines, I am the coach for the Philippines Sports Commission and the chairman of the Asian Volleyball Confederation. At the last Asian Games in Doha, I was the competition manager for volleyball. So I am very experienced in organizing big events. It is an exciting role for me since this is the first Asian Beach Games. I’m bringing a few experts that I’ve collaborated with before at Doha to assist the BABGOC before the OCA (Olympic Council of Asia) visits in June. Madam Rita wants the venue to be of the highest standard. The first inspections will be in June so we have to show them that we are ready.

Q: Venue-wise?
A:
Not just for the venue, but also the signage publicizing the event. This is very important in June. That is why I am bringing the whole team to Bali. We basically need to decorate Bali with the logo and with the look of the game.

Q: How do you see the Asian Beach Games compared to other competitions?
A: If we talk about the Asian Beach Games, there is no history to compare since this will be the first one. This is very good because we are able to throw in some new and fresh ideas that can be a lasting legacy for Bali and future games.

Q: How do you visualize the Asian Beach Games in your mind right now?
A: Well, I think it will be an exciting event. It is a game that is free and comfortable. It is going to be a very relaxing event where you can wear shorts and slippers. It will be something different, less formal than the other Asian Games. This is out in the beaches of Bali. So it will be more fun and most importantly, it should have a lasting effect to the people of Bali.

Q: Relating to the competition manager’s objectives, how will you ensure that each athlete is provided with equal conditions to display their talent?
A: Every aspect must be on par with the talent involved. The environment, the venues and the facilities provided must meet international standards. Basically, we prepare the best environment that we can create so that the athletes can perform well.

Q: Are you aware that Indonesia is not normally associated with aquatic or beach sports?
A: Yes but I’m hoping this event could open their eyes. This will be good for tourism, for the government, and for the economy in Bali. I’m sure that sponsors and suppliers will want to participate and any businesses related to tourism will benefit.

Q: So, in which phase are you right know?
A: Well, we are still in phase 1 which is the development of Concepts of Operation. This phase is all about planning, and coordination amongst each sports representative, especially on the decision of venues I must coordinate with each venue manager as early as possible so that they can draw the blue print of the venue. This phase focuses more on ideally clustering each functional area.

Q: What kind of challenges do you perceive?
A: Well, surely the challenges are there, especially when you are dealing with the heart and soul of the Games. If the entire plan is in place then the other department should just follow, like IT, venues, and other shall integrate slowly. There are so many checklists but basically it’s just simple hard work that we must implement from now. If you have very good timing then you can do it.

Q: What do you think about the sports condition is Indonesia, compared to other countries?
A: Well, the problem I think is always the funding. However, if you have a very good marketing and know how to get the message out of the event, especially to the sponsors, then it will be very good for the event as well as for the country. The government has limited sports funding but it’s not only happening in Indonesia. It is also in Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand. So what we are going to do is work as well as we can with what we have and still perform with the highest standard in hosting the Games.
